LILITH, QUEEN OF THE NIGHT

with Kohenet Yael Tischler — Sundays, 2-3:30 pm ET / 11 am-12:30 pm PT, November 2, 9, and 23

Lilith, the Queen of the Demons, has haunted Jewish folklore since before the Hebrew Bible to the present day. Seductress, baby-stealer, rebel, and feminist icon, Lilith has worn many faces - let’s meet some of them! Here’s a preview of each session:

Session 1: Lilith the Demoness

You’ve heard of Eve… but did you know that Adam had a wife before her? One who refused to be submissive, and decided on a life of infanticide, semen theft and threatening pregnant women instead? Meet the Lilith who became Queen of the Demons, embodying the fears of men and women alike, haunting the shadows of Jewish folklore.

Session 2: How to Fight Off Lilith

Lilith embodied the fears of baby loss, early childhood mortality and sexuality. In the face of these fears, our ancestors developed ritual technologies to fight her off and keep her away. Learn about amulets, incantation bowls and other ways to keep the Demon Queen at bay.

Session 3: Lilith the Feminist Icon

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, many groups reclaimed Lilith as their heroine, celebrating her independence, rebellion, sexuality and defiance of the patriarchal order. In this session, we’ll meet Lilith rewritten as a symbol of feminist empowerment, lesbian love, and transgender solidarity.
