SEFER YETZIRAH: The Book of Creation and Jewish Earth-Based Theology and Practice with Rabbi Jill Hammer, PhD — Thursdays, October 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5, 19, 26, and December 3, 3-4:15 pm ET / 12-1:15 pm PT

Sefer Yetzirah, or the Book of Creation, is an ancient Jewish mystical work that describes God’s process of creating the universe. Written in Hebrew and composed of poetic passages that offer cryptic, mythic images and meditative practices, Sefer Yetzirah imagines letters as the building blocks of the universe, introduces us to basic cosmic structures of space, time, and body-soul, and envisions a process that allows the Divine to move from transcendence to embodiment. Sefer Yetzirah locates sanctity in the details of the physical universe and the body, and invites us to contemplate, and even partake in, the Divine creative process.

In this eight-session course with Rabbi Jill Hammer, PhD, we’ll enter the book’s world, study the text, and meditate on its images and concepts, and consider how this book can be a foundation for an earth-based, embodied and egalitarian Jewish theology and practice.
